Small Waters Strategies – Spawn transition

Late spring is a time of transition on most waters in the U.S. Bass and other species can be in pre-spawn, spawn or post-spawn conditions. Here are a few “indicator” signs of what stage your bass might be in and how to adjust accordingly with baits and presentation.

Post Spawn Sand Pit Bass

“It’s a post-spawn junk fish bite,” explained Mike Iaconelli, releasing a sand pit bass caught at VIP Adventures’ Lake #1. Ike was dead-on! Fishing with Ike and Boyd Duckett, we caught bass, including a number of four- to six-pound post-spawn fish, on new Berkley Havoc Bottom Hopper and Devil's Spear soft plastics and Rapala DTs cranked through deadfall.

Carolina Sand Pits

Small Waters Fishing met with Mike Iaconelli, Gary Klein, Boyd Duckett, Bobby Lane in South Carolina to fish a series of sand pits managed by Marc Deschenes of VIP Adventures. The pros were looking forward to a couple of days of fun fishing after the Bassmaster Carolina Clash at Lake Murray. We also wanted to test some of the latest lures and tackle from Pure Fishing, including the new line of Berkley Havoc plastic baits.
